If you were diagnosed with one of the many illnesses associated with water contamination, including esophageal cancer, breast cancer, kidney cancer and liver cancer to name a few, then your illness could be covered under the Camp Lejeune claims. However, if you have any other type of cancer there is a potential that it will be covered under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act.

You must prove that you were exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune for at least 30 days between May 1st 1953 and December 31st 1987. You must also have served at least 60 days during that time frame before being discharged or transferred out of the military base.

The following is not an exhaustive list but may help you begin your search:

  • DD-214 - A DD-214 is a Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. If available, this document indicates when and where a veteran was discharged from active duty service in the United States Armed Forces, including dates of active duty, rank, pay grade and reason for separation (resignation by request; retirement; expiration of term; transfer to another component or organization).

  • Military Records - Military personnel files contain information about individuals who served in all branches of the U.S. armed forces from World War II through December 31, 1989 (the cut off date for medical benefits). They also include some records after that date if they were medically retired due to exposure at Camp Lejeune during those years with documentation showing how many days/weeks/months/years were spent there by each person who became ill as a result "of such exposure."

You may need to submit original medical records to show evidence of your condition. These records should include all diagnoses of covered conditions made after your date of separation from active duty and continuing up through the present time. They should also include any treatment notes related to these conditions and all other medical evidence including hospitalizations and outpatient appointments that show that your disease is directly related to your exposure at Camp Lejeune.
